“Why don’t you just bring her with you, Hee-sun?”

It’s Saturday night and Zoe is sprawling on her couch, an abandoned paperback anthology flopped face-down on the cushion beside her and a glass of wine in the hand not holding her phone.

“I can’t believe you even need to ask. May I remind you of the 2012 crisis known as ‘Hee-sun was Irreparably Harmed by their Traitorous Boss and Birth Giver?’ I am not willing to repeat one of the most unfortunate events of my life.” Hee-sun sniffs at the very idea and Zoe finds herself laughing.

“It wasn’t so bad,” she drawls, hearing the hint of a lisp in her words. She’s not currently nursing her first, or even her third glass of wine. The bottle in front of her is… she squints at it. Is it really almost empty? Well. Hee-sun is always telling her to loosen up.

“It most certainly was so bad! I had nightmares, Zoe. For an entire week. My skin looked terrible afterwards because I wasn’t getting my beauty sleep.”

“Your skin always looks amazing,” Zoe scoffs. She goes to take a drink and finds she’s sipping the last of what’s in her glass currently. The bottle, a full three feet away from her on the coffee table, seems unfortunately far away. She pouts at it, but it doesn’t appear to sympathize with her plight and moves no closer.

“Thank you, I know,” Hee-sun is saying, “but I wanted to exaggerate for dramatic effect. The point is, I will not be bringing my mother with me to explore the best farmers market in the world with you. You’ll have to find someone else to tag along.”

Zoe rolls her eyes toward the ceiling. She doesn’t have anyone else. No one else except Mollie, and Zoe is… not sure what to do about Mollie, right now, but she doesn’t think a date to the farmers market is a good idea. Probably. It might give the wrong impression.

“And what impression is that?” Hee-sun asks, and Zoe realizes she’d spoken at least part of that thought aloud.

“That we’re dating. We’re not dating.” She’s very certain of this. It’s one of the first things she tells her partners, so the expectations are clear. She doesn’t want a relationship. They’re too much drama, they interfere with her work.

“Uh huh. Sure.” Hee-sun’s voice is dry. “Remind me, how often do you see Mollie? Outside of work? It must be two or three times a week.”

“She usually comes over on Tuesday and Friday nights. Sometimes Saturday night too.” They’re the best nights of Zoe’s week, she carefully doesn’t say.

“And do you just have sex?”

“Well. No, I feed her sometimes.” Every time. “And we talk occasionally.” Also every time. Once they talked for hours about Mollie’s family and Zoe’s professional goals and school an—

“Right.” This might be the most skeptical voice Hee-sun has ever used on Zoe, and she’s both impressed and perturbed by that. “Zoe. You want to move that girl into your apartment and feed her every day and read her your weird sapphic poetry and meet all of her crazy huge family.
